the art of rest: why laziness is essential


We glorify the full calendar. The unread count. The constant, low hum of being available. But what if rest — even the kind that looks like laziness — is not the absence of work, but the part of the work nobody sees?

In the Mediterranean summer there is a quiet permission to pause. The heat slows the day, the sea invites stillness, and time stretches in a way that feels almost eternal. To disconnect in this season isn't indulgence. It's physiology.

the cost of never stopping

Start with the uncomfortable arithmetic.

In 2021, the World Health Organisation and the International Labour Organisation published the first global estimate of what overwork does to a body. Working 55 hours or more a week, compared with a standard 35–40, was associated with a 35% higher risk of stroke and a 17% higher risk of dying from ischaemic heart disease. Their modelling attributed roughly 745,000 deaths in a single year to long working hours — making it, on their analysis, the occupational risk factor carrying the largest disease burden in the world. Not dust. Not noise. Hours.

The estimate has been contested, and the causal evidence is stronger for stroke than for heart disease. But the direction of travel is not really in dispute. Something happens to a cardiovascular system that is never allowed to stand down.

As a surgeon I find this familiar. We spend our training learning to intervene, and almost none of it learning to wait. Yet the operation is only the interruption. The healing happens afterwards, quietly, in tissue we are no longer touching. Rest isn't what follows the work. Rest is the second half of the work.

the siesta, taken seriously

In the Greek arm of the EPIC cohort, researchers followed 23,681 adults with no history of heart disease, stroke or cancer for an average of just over six years. Those who napped systematically — thirty minutes or more, at least three times a week — had a 37% lower coronary mortality than those who didn't. The association was strongest in working men, which the authors read as a clue about mechanism: the benefit looked less like sleep and more like stress relief.

This is observational, and it should be held lightly. People who nap may differ in a dozen unmeasured ways from people who don't, and earlier studies disagreed. But it is a striking finding to sit beside the WHO figures, and it comes from precisely the culture that never needed convincing. The Mediterranean did not invent the siesta as a health intervention. It simply built the afternoon around a body's actual rhythm instead of a calendar's.

laziness as recovery

True recovery is not passive. It is active restoration — a distinct physiological state the body enters when we finally stop demanding things of it.

Something reliable happens in the brain when attention has nowhere to go. In the wakeful rest paradigm, people who sit quietly for ten minutes after learning something remember it better later than people who complete a simple task instead; the leading interpretation is that a quiet window lets newly formed memories stabilise before the next wave of input arrives. The literature here is genuinely mixed, and effect sizes vary. But the underlying mechanism is well described: during rest, the default mode network comes online, and the brain does its filing.

Creativity behaves the same way. In one elegant study, participants working on a divergent-thinking problem improved most not after hard work, and not after total rest, but after an undemanding task — the kind that lets the mind wander. That nuance matters, and it may be the most useful sentence in this piece: the productive form of laziness is rarely stillness. It's a slow walk. A swim with no distance in mind. Lying on the sand and letting the sea take your attention without asking anything back.

the nudge of place

Places carry power. Forte dei Marmi — pine leaning toward the sea, striped cabanas, bicycles gliding past terracotta at sunset — shapes behaviour without a word of instruction. This isn't only aesthetics. It's environmental design doing the work that willpower usually fails at.

The dose is smaller than most people imagine. In a study of nearly 20,000 adults in England, spending at least 120 minutes a week in natural environments was associated with significantly better self-reported health and wellbeing — and it made no difference whether that came in one long visit or several short ones. Below two hours, no reliable benefit. Above roughly 200–300 minutes, no further gain.

The physiology underneath is consistent, if modest: across forest-bathing studies, time in green space is associated with lower salivary cortisol, lower blood pressure and increased heart rate variability — the signature of a parasympathetic system finally getting a turn.

Two hours a week. That is a Sunday morning. It is also, notably, not a holiday.

disconnecting to reconnect

The most rigorous evidence we have for switching off is now causal.

In a randomised trial published in PNAS Nexus in 2025, 467 adults installed an app that blocked all mobile internet on their phones for two weeks — calls and texts still permitted, laptops untouched. Daily phone use roughly halved. Sustained attention, wellbeing and mental health all improved, and the mental health effects were still present after access was restored. The authors' own comparison for the attention gain is arresting: roughly equivalent to being ten years younger.

Worth knowing: only about a quarter of participants managed to keep the block running for ten of the fourteen days. Even a heavily motivated, self-selected group found this genuinely hard. That is not a reason to dismiss the finding. It's a reason to design the disconnection rather than rely on resolve — and it is why the beach, the boat, the mountain hut work so well. They take the decision away from you.

the part nobody tells you about holidays

Here is the honest problem with the summer we are all about to have.

Vacations do work. A meta-analysis found a small positive effect on health and wellbeing during and after time off. But it also found something more instructive: the benefit fades within two to four weeks of returning to work. Longer follow-ups have shown much the same. In the Helsinki Businessmen Study, men taking three weeks or less of annual leave carried a 37% higher risk of death over thirty years — and, tellingly, improving their diet, weight and smoking did not compensate for it.

Read those two findings together and the conclusion writes itself. Two weeks in Tuscany cannot metabolise fifty weeks of never stopping. The holiday is not the mechanism. The rhythm is.

What actually holds is the smaller, unglamorous thing: psychological detachment — genuinely being off, not merely away from the desk. Across 86 studies and 38,000 employees, detachment tracks with less exhaustion, better sleep, better wellbeing. It's available on a Tuesday. It doesn't require an airport.

a gentle invitation

So take the holiday. Lie on the sand the way children do, effortlessly, with no plan and no intention of improving at it.

But bring one small piece of it home. Twenty minutes outside without your phone. A walk after lunch you don't measure. An hour on a Sunday where the surroundings, not your discipline, do the work of slowing you down.

Not because it's virtuous. Because a body that never gets to stop eventually stops on its own terms rather than yours.
